FAMILY
"I know how hard it is to put food on your family." - George W. Bush

Alex and I are enjoying our seventh anniversary as a couple on April 9 (2007). Our domestic family consists of ourselves and our two cats, Buster and Cookie. If you haven't met Alex let me tell you about him. He's a decade younger than I am. He was born in Israel and raised in Greece. His dad is Israeli and his mom is Greek. He came to the U.S. on his own when he was sixteen and graduated from high school and college in the U.S. He's absolutely brilliant (in areas that I'm not--like computers, other technologies and finances). Did I mention he's really cute?

We met online. The name he was using in his dating listing was "Atheodo." Since I studied Greek in college (the Biblical sort), I saw that it was an unusual Greek compound meaning "God gives not." ('a' as a prefix negates what follows). It was such a strange expression I decided to send him a message to ask about his name. He explained that 'A' was an abbreviation for his first name and 'theodo' was shortened from his last name. He was impressed to find anyone who understood Greek. We were quickly talking on the phone and when I mentioned that his accent sounded like it had an Israeli influence, he was really impressed (he had not mentioned that he spent the first five years of his life in Israel).

I have four brothers and two sisters and four parents. It's one of those "Yours, Mine & Ours" families (my natural parents divorced and each remarried and subsequently enjoyed 30+ years of until-death do we part marital bliss). Actually I have two overlapping families (remember venn diagrams?) and although it wants to be awkward from time to time, I consider it all a blessed gift.

Both of my dads passed away fairly recently (Jim in '99 and Bob in '06). I miss them both profoundly. They each contributed to my life in such unique and wonderful ways.

More to come...
